Volvo 850R - No Reserve

Volvo 850R

“Iconic” is vastly overused to describe many modern classics - but few can dispute applying that to what Volvo did to the 850 when they took it racing

In touring car racing, it was never necessarily a dominant performer but few cars captured public affection the way the Volvo did with the performance version of soccer mum's sedan and wagon -the 850"R"

Australia's most famous racing driver, Peter Brock (05), drove this works 850 in the Australian Super Touring Championship against the dominant Audi's & BMWs. Later in 1996, Jim Richards (the rain master) drove the 850 at a Bathurst support event, giving Volvo their first Australian Super Touring victory.

Porsche helped with tweaks to its suspension and the design of the interior, which featured dark grey leather, synthetic suede and wood inlays. In the 1996 R version, the 2.3 engine wielded 247bhp thanks to a larger Garrett turbo with improved engine management to reduce turbo lag and a more efficient intercooler. A limited-slip diff on the five-speed manual version helped the car, again offered in saloon and estate forms, to achieve 0-62mph in 6.7sec.
