Auction result: Passed in @ $55,000 - owner decided to keep
1972 Mercedes 280CE
This is fairly simple - there are rust cars and there are no rust cars. If you find a no rust car you buy it. If it has books low miles and original paint then it is starting to verge in unicorn status
The other factor is that these cars are in our view the wrong price currently - the "pagoda" convertible versions of these 114 series are now commonly trading around $250,000 but these hardtop pillarless coupes, much more sensible and usable in the harsh Australian climate are still trading under $100,000. A 1968 Mustang sells for more than these cars are selling for which makes no sense at all.
So to be clear, we at The Collector Garage see the w114 coupe as a strikingly beautiful car, perfectly usable and drivable today as they were when produced and still trading ay an approachable price point, for now. We see these as Top10 most likely Make and Model to do well in the future.
The Mercedes-Benz 280CE was a variant of the W114 Coupe that was introduced for the 1973 model year. The 280 CE was one of the top variants offered for the W114, and was equipped with Mercedes' M110.981 engine. This 2.8L inline six was fitted with Bosch's D-Jetronic fuel-injection system and generated 185hp and 176 lb ft of torque. This power was sent to the rear wheels via manual and automatic transmissions. The W114 Mercedes-Benz 280CE ended production in 1976, with 11,518 examples built
This example:
- genuine original paint survivor - almost all these w114's have been affected by rust and to find a genuine original car is very hard and fast appreciating values
- double chrome front bumperlast one sold on carsales for $57,000 and this one is in much cleaner condition with original paint.
- Runs perfectly and in near showroom condition
- all major services have been completed, it has service records and is clear of accident history to the best of our knowledge.
- Very low documented mileage - has service books confirming miles including 100,000 mile service in 1985; 120,000 in 1989; 136,000 in 1992; 168,000 in 2004

US cars are always much much cheaper than Australian cars but see this recent US sale as a barometer of where pricing is heading - Sold in the US for USD $48,000 or about AUD $64,000 - and remember US prices are always way lower than Australia
